Description

This summer, I obtained a spectacular new find of fluorite directly from the miners at the Akwana deposit. I have never seen specimens of this quality before. Fluorite comes in combination with sparkling water-clear doubly terminated quartz crystals, ranging to several millimeters in diameter, golden flakes of pyrite, and octahedral galena crystals.

Fluorite crystals from this find display a strong color change depending on the light source. Under artificial light, they appear green, while in the morning daylight, they display a bluish-purple color, similar to the Weardale fluorite. Under UV light, Nigerian fluorite fluoresces with an unseen electric-blue color, so difficult to catch with the camera, as it wants to burn the CCD sensor. I took a few photos by swiping the UV light across the regularly illuminated specimen to obtain a brief impression of the strong blue fluorescence, as shown in the photo sequence. The last three photos show the full-size specimen photographed under artificial light, UV light, and daylight.

Doubly terminated quartz crystals and pyrite flakes perched on the fluorite faces add to the breathtaking appeal of a cabinet specimen so rich, sparkling, and dynamic that it will make a precious addition to any fluorite collection.
