Description

In the heart of the Bosnian crystal paradise lies the small township of Busovača, home to the world's famous hyalophane fourlings. They were discovered in the mid-1950s when Yugoslavian geologists were prospecting for optical quartz. The quality of hyalophane matches that of the World's finest feldspars, like the Itrongo sanidine.

The hyalophane occurs in Alpine-type veins within Paleozoic phyllite in Zagradski potok, west of Busovača, alongside quartz, siderite, rutile, anatase, and apatite. Fine specimens with hyalophane crystals up to several centimeters long are not rare for the locality. The largest crystals here measure 23 cm, and they are all twinned.

The specimen offered here is a combination of Manebach and Baveno twins, called fourlings. It has an excellent luster and a fine, amber color, and is a complete floater. It is dominated by a 10 mm large fourling and a few smaller ones composing a small cluster of fourlings. So difficult to photograph! Its base is composed of brown siderite and golden rutile crystals, which are also partially included in hyalophane.

The specimen was collected by me in 2009 during the dam construction at the Hyalophane locality on Zagradski Potok. These veins produced the last known high-quality specimens from this locality. Nowadays, the locality is inaccessible due to the water reservoir for the Busovača Township.
