Description

Exceptional combination of carrot-orange pyramidal wulfenite and two generations of calcite from the Doroteja stope in the abandoned Helena mine near Črna na Koroškem. The mine is part of the Mežica lead-zinc ore field and produced premier wulfenite specimens between 1950 and 1980. This specimen was found during our mineralogical explorations in 2005, which led to the establishment of the Mežica Mine Museum and the publication of a book on the mineralogy of the Mežica ore deposit, also featured in this joint auction.

The specimen offered here is composed of two fragments of limestone joined together by the first generation of calcite. This calcite is coarsely crystallized and is lead-rich (plumbocalcite). It is partially corroded by acidic ore solutions that produced selenite. This was followed by the crystallization of pyramidal wulfenite, which is unique to the Mežica mines. In the final stage, fine-grained snow-white calcite crystallized on the top of the wulfenite crystals. This second-generation calcite is characteristic of the Doroteja stope and is not found elsewhere in the mine.
