Description

These are 3 bones including the claw of a cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) foot that are in a very good condition and well preserved.
The bones are drilled and connected with a wire so that it can be easily displayed

Those bears lived about 35.000 to 70.000 years ago. The cave it was found in is called 'Drachenhöhle' (Dragon's cave) and is one of the most famous caves for fossil finds in Austria.
In the 1920s, Guano (bat excrements) was mined there for agricultural use. There are no more finds possible because the 'Drachenhöhle' has been under protection since 1928 and became a natural monument in 1949.

Numerous bones of cave bears were thought to be the remains of dragons. This is particularly evident in the legend of  'the dragon-slayer of Mixnitz'.
