Description

Hedegaardite is a rare phosphate mineral that was only recognized by the IMA in 2014. It belongs to the whitlockite subgroup within the merrillite group. It typically forms in dry (arid) coastal regions through the chemical interaction of phosphates from seabird guano with the surrounding rock. Here, hedegaardite forms white, fine-grained masses.
