Description

Botryogen is a hydrated magnesium-iron sulfate. Its name derives from the Greek words botrys (grape) and genos (to give birth/produce), alluding to its characteristic grape-like growth forms. Botryogen is a typical secondary mineral formed by the oxidation of pyrite or other iron sulfides. This formation occurs preferentially under arid (dry) climatic conditions, as the mineral is water-soluble. It forms orange crystals on matrix.
