Description

The Jeffrey Mine in Quebec is arguably the best locality in the world for Grossular Garnet and this piece is an excellent example for the locality. Their glassy appearance and pure, vibrant color resemble liquid sunlight, with extraordinary transparency and true gem quality, a high lustre and rich coloration. The crystal have a perfect rhombic dodecahedral habit with sharp crystallization, 1.7 cm and is emplaced aesthetically on a Chlorite Group mineral coated matrix for great contrast and aesthetics. With such amazing gemminess, striking luster and irresistible color, this is a truly superb garnet from this great locality — now closed since 2001. Isolated Grossular Garnets on matrix from Jeffrey are exceptionally rare, particularly in large and isolated crystals such as this! It is a rare style, orange on black, compared to others here, and among our most favorite. This probably came out in the 1980s. For references see the 2013 issue of The Mineralogical Record vol. 44, # 4. In superb condition. Ex Hefendehl collection: Kurt Hefendehl (Zell, Germany), was a well-known collector in the mineral world all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 in about 1952; and his great and varied worldwide collection reached a number of over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest where he spent much time collecting.
