Description

Well-crystallized helvine on matrix from the classic Hørtekollen locality near Sylling, Lier, Viken, Norway. The specimen features brown to honey-brown helvine crystals with a vitreous luster, embedded in contrasting host rock. The crystals show good definition and typical tetrahedral to complex crystal forms characteristic of the helvine group.

Helvine is a relatively uncommon beryllium–manganese silicate and a member of the helvine group, best known from skarn and contact-metamorphic environments. Norwegian helvine, particularly from Hørtekollen, is considered classic and highly collectible, as the locality is well known for producing well-formed crystals and a diverse suite of Be-bearing minerals.

Specimens from Hørtekollen are especially valued by systematic and European mineral collectors due to the locality’s historical significance and the increasing scarcity of fine material.
