Description

Rare livingstonite from the classic Guadalcázar district, Guadalcázar Municipality, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The specimen shows grey to dark grey metallic livingstonite occurring as massive to compact crystalline material, with a subdued metallic luster characteristic of this rare mercury sulfosalt. The piece is representative for material from this historic Mexican locality.

Livingstonite is a rare mercury–antimony sulfosalt and is strongly associated with low-temperature hydrothermal deposits. Guadalcázar is the type locality for livingstonite and remains the most important and historically significant source of this mineral worldwide. Specimens from this locality are highly valued due to their type-locality status and their importance in systematic sulfosalt collections
