Rubellite

Attractive rubellite crystals on matrix from the Haapaluoma pegmatite, Peräseinäjoki, Seinäjoki, South Ostrobothnia, Finland. The specimen features an elongated, well-defined deep pink to purplish-red rubellite crystal embedded in a pale pegmatitic matrix, accompanied by a smaller secondary crystal, creating a balanced and aesthetic miniature.

Rubellite is the manganese-rich red to pink variety of elbaite, belonging to the tourmaline group. The tourmaline group was established in the late 18th century, with elbaite formally described in 1913. The name rubellite derives from its ruby-like red coloration rather than a specific person.

The Haapaluoma pegmatite is a classic Finnish locality known for lithium–cesium–tantalum (LCT) pegmatites, producing fine elbaite varieties including rubellite. These crystals formed during the late-stage magmatic–hydrothermal evolution of the pegmatite, crystallizing from boron- and lithium-rich fluids.

Rubellite from this locality is uncommon, particularly in well-formed, intact crystals on matrix. Finnish rubellites are appreciated for their natural crystal shapes and subtle color zoning rather than extreme saturation.
