Description

Rare hambergite on matrix from the classic Klåstad Quarry, Tjølling, Larvik, Vestfold og Telemark, Norway. The specimen shows a well-defined, colourless to transparent hambergite crystal with a vitreous luster, clearly embedded in matrix. The crystal exhibits the typical prismatic habit known for this species.

Hambergite is a rare borate mineral, first described in 1890 and named in honour of Axel Hamberg (1863–1933), a Swedish geologist and mineralogist known for his work in physical geography and mineralogy. The species predates the IMA system and is therefore considered a grandfathered mineral (pre-IMA, no official IMA number assigned).

The mineral forms in granitic pegmatites, and Norwegian pegmatites are among the classic European occurrences. Hambergite is regarded as rare, with well-crystallized specimens being uncommon and primarily sought after by systematic collectors.
