Montgomeryite

Crystalline montgomeryite on matrix from the Iron Monarch Open Cut at Iron Knob, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The specimen features pale pink to reddish, rounded crystal aggregates and botryoidal to globular crusts perched on a dark, iron-rich matrix. Individual crystals are typically microscopic and form compact, sparkling aggregates rather than distinct macroscopic crystal forms.

Montgomeryite is a rare hydrated calcium–aluminium phosphate, belonging to the phosphate mineral class. At Iron Monarch, it occurs as a secondary mineral, formed through the alteration of primary phosphate-bearing phases under low-temperature, oxidizing conditions.

The Iron Knob district is a classic iron-ore locality, and montgomeryite is found here in association with late-stage phosphate mineralization within cavities and fractures of the host rock. Its attractive pink coloration contrasts strongly with the dark matrix, making specimens from this locality particularly distinctive.

At this specific locality, associated minerals commonly include strengite, variscite-group phosphates, and iron oxides such as hematite and goethite, reflecting the strongly oxidized environment of formation.

Montgomeryite from Iron Monarch is considered locally uncommon to rare, and well-developed specimens are sought after by collectors of phosphate minerals and Australian localities.
