Description

Deep red proustite forming a well-developed crystal cluster on matrix from the St Andreasberg District, Lower Saxony, Germany. The crystals show sharp trigonal forms with bright internal reflections and a characteristic ruby-red to dark crimson coloration, contrasting strongly with the pale grey host matrix.

Proustite is a silver arsenic sulfide and a classic member of the sulfosalt group, historically known as “ruby silver.” Specimens from St Andreasberg are among the most classic European occurrences, originating from the famous Harz mining district, which played a major role in the study of silver minerals during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The mineral formed in low- to moderate-temperature hydrothermal veins, typically associated with other silver-bearing sulfosalts. Crystals from this locality are valued for their color, sharp crystal definition, and strong historical significance.

Proustite is light-sensitive and may darken with prolonged exposure to strong light; storage in low-light conditions is recommended to preserve color.
