Description

Well-developed native silver occurring on calcite matrix from the classic St. Andreasberg District in the Upper Harz mining region, Lower Saxony, Germany. The specimen shows dark grey to blackened native silver, forming irregular masses and dendritic to massive growths distributed across the calcite host. The dark surface coloration is typical for historic Harz silver specimens and is caused by partial surface alteration.

At St. Andreasberg, native silver formed in hydrothermal vein systems related to late-stage polymetallic mineralization. The silver was deposited from low- to medium-temperature hydrothermal fluids circulating through steeply dipping veins, often in association with carbonates and silver sulfides.

In this specimen, parts of the silver show partial alteration to acanthite, visible as darker dendritic or crust-like areas on the calcite. Such transformation from native silver to silver sulfides is well documented for Harz localities and commonly occurred post-deposition under changing redox and sulfur conditions.

The St. Andreasberg district is one of the most historically important silver localities in Europe, with mining activity dating back to the Middle Ages. Native silver specimens from this district are today considered classic and highly collectible, especially when preserved on contrasting calcite matrix.

This specimen originates from the former collection of C. Strömpl, an amateur mineralogist.
