Description

This is a historically interesting piece of so-called 'Chromeisen' = chromite from Nizhnii Tagil in Siberia. It comes with an amazing old Dr. F. Krantz pen and ink label dated 1900-1920. I assume that the 'Demidoff Werk' (Demidoff plant) refersto the Demidoff Mine in Nizhny Tagil - see below.

The Demidov (or Demidoff, Russian: Демидовы) family was an important Russian industrial dynasty that played a key role in the development of Russian heavy industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in the Ural region. Their “works” (industrial facilities) included:
Metalworking: The Demidovs were pioneers in Russian iron and steel production. Under the leadership of Nikita Demidov (c. 1656–1725) and his son Akinfi Nikitich Demidov (1678–1745), numerous ironworks and arms factories were established, which, among other things, supplied the Russian army with weapons.
Mining: They owned extensive mines, especially copper mines, such as the “Demidoff Mine” in Nizhny Tagil in the Sverdlovsk Oblast, Ural. The Ural region was the center of their mining activities.
Wealth and patronage: The immense wealth generated by the works made the family one of the richest in Russia. They also became known for their patronage and built magnificent villas and churches, such as the Nikolo-Zaretskaya Church in Tula, which served as the family burial place.
The Demidov factories played a decisive role in the industrialization of Russia during the reign of Peter the Great and contributed significantly to the economic and military strength of the empire. Many of their former sites in the Urals are now historical industrial monuments or have been developed into modern industrial facilities.
