Description

Piece of amorphous, dark green 'Halbopal' (common opal) from 'Niederungarn' (Lower Hungary). Around 1900, the term 'Lower Hungary' (Hungarian: Alsó-Magyarország, Slovak: Dolné Uhorsko) was used as a geographical designation for the southern and eastern territories of the historic Kingdom of Hungary within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The area essentially comprised:
- The Great Hungarian Plain south of the Carpathians and east of the Danube and Tisza rivers.
- Parts of present-day northern Serbia (especially Vojvodina).
- Parts of present-day Romania (especially Banat and the Crișana region).

Comes with a really amazing antique label.
