An interesting historic specimen:
Kolyvan, Kolyvansky District, Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia - located on the Chaus River (a tributary of the Ob River), is currently an urban-type settlement and the capital of the Kolyvansky District. The settlement was founded in 1822 in the place of the Chaus fortress.

The name 'Kolyvan' in use in the 18th century is different from the locality mentioned above. The Kolyvan Governorate was created in 1782 by detaching Kolyvansky oblast from the Tobolsk Governorate. In 1783 it was transformed into Kolyvan Viceroyality. Its large territory encompassed five uezds: Kolyvansky, Biysky, Kuznetsky, Semipalatinsky (nowadays in Kazakhstan), and Krasnoyarsky. The capital was the Berdsky fortress, renamed 'Kolyvan'. In 1796 the viceroyality was disbanded and its territory was allocated to the governorates of Tobolsk and Irkutsk. The former capital was renamed Berdskoye, later Berdsk (on the map "Karte des Altaischen Hüttenbezirks und der angränzenden Gegenden" it is indicated as Bergsk). The toponym 'Kolyvan' temporarely disappeared, but it was used again in 1822 for the settlement at the Chaus fortress.

The 'real' site, which was then known as 'Kolywan', were (beneath other) the Zmeinogorsk mines (Schlangenberg) in the Altai. Rich silver ore was discovered in 1735, and then mined by both overground and underground methods. Developed from 1745-1871. After the ores were more or less exhausted, the local smelter ceased to work in 1893. Half of the Altai silver came from this deposit. [cit. mindat]
