Description

A piece of high-grade silver ore with arborescent silver dendrites and a crust of grey safforite, a Co-Ni-Fe arsenide, embedded in white calcite.

The Hellens-Eplett Mine was a short-lived silver mine in the famous mining region of Cobalt, Ontario, which operated in the 1980s. Primary raw material was Silver (with deposits of cobalt minerals and nickel --> safflorite). The deposit was discovered in 1983 by Silverside Resources. The operation proved uneconomical. The mine was closed in 1988/1989 and is considered abandoned. Rare material from an unusual locale.

One side is sawn but not polished.
