Description

A very attractive matrix specimen of smithsonite from Mexico. The piece is covered with beautiful botryoidal aggregates of smithsonite showing a soft blue coloration.

The botryoidal surfaces are smooth and highly lustrous, forming rounded crystal aggregates that give the specimen a very characteristic appearance. The glossy surface enhances the delicate blue tone and creates a striking contrast with the underlying matrix.

Smithsonite commonly forms these botryoidal growth structures in oxidized zones of zinc deposits, where it develops as a secondary mineral replacing earlier zinc minerals such as sphalerite. This specimen shows this typical habit very well and represents a particularly aesthetic example from Mexico.
