Description

Gorgeous long petrified calamites from the coal mine of Waterschei (Belgium) that is extremely rare in collections. The bark is fossilized as glassy black coal, and the trunk core is silicified, perfectly preserving the distinctive segmented, bamboo-like appearance and vertical ribbing. It is still placed on part of the siltstone matrix. It moves a little bit, and when I tried to removed from the matrix, I realized that it is still firmly attached in it. In Waterschei coal mining started in 1924 and was finally closed in 1987.

This piece was collected in the mine dumps in January 2025 by Leon Vandewal.
