Description

Slab cut at both sides featuring a reef block, made of tube-like structures of hippurites, completely composed of calcite. Hippurites is an extinct genus of bivalve mollusks that belonged to the rudist group. These animals, with a very different appearance from modern bivalves, were the main reef builders in tropical Tethys Ocean during the Late Cretaceous. The cylindrical in shape structure was to anchor themself vertically to the substrate. They disappeared completely at the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately 66 million years ago, during the same mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.

I collected this nice specimen near the locality of Castrojimeno (Segovia) during a cartographical work of Cretaceous rocks in November/1995. It has been since then in my collection.
