Description

Block of white sandstone richly impregnated by black petroleum. This sandstone is of the Utrillas Fm, Late Cretaceous, well-known in this area at the North of the Burgos province, where numerous petroleum-rich sandstones outcrop here. The nearby Ayoluengo oil Field exploited this petroleum from 1964 until 2017. However, the exploited sandstones there are of Purbeck age (Late Jurasic). This is a very good, didactical example that shows how petroleum is present in the depth, occluded in the porosity of permeable rocks.

Collected by Iván Blanco in 4/1997 during a field trip of Oil Geology.
