Description

Nice 0.9 Kg specimen of Stigmaria from the Houthalen coal mines. Stigmaria is a form taxon for common fossils of Carboniferous age. They represent the underground rooting structures of arborescent lycophytes such as Sigillaria and Lepidodendron under the order Lepidodendrales. This gorgeous big sample has the exterior fossilized as glassy black coal, nicely preserving the distinctive circular scars, while the core is silicified. In Houthalen coal mining started in 1938 and mines were finally closed in 1992.

This piece was collected in the mine dumps in 2025 by Leon Vandewal.
