Description

Limonite-cemented aggregate of quartz sands and brown oolitic ironstone of quite homogeneous size ooids (<2 mm). The Kluisberg is a so-called “witness hill”, originated at the Late Miocene, when sea levels rose and the area was submerged. The sands deposited during this period are called the Diest sands. What made these sands unique was its high glauconitic content.

When the sea finally retreated north after the Miocene, the deposited iron-rich glauconite sands were exposed to weathering, and glauconite oxidized into limonitic ironstone, and the resulting "rust" cemented the sand together into a hard iron sandstone. The iron cemented sandstone was much more resistant to erosion, leaving these “witness hills”. This sample is a representative specimen of such oolitic ironstones.

Acquired before 1979. Ex Gustaf collection #745, with his handwritten label.
