Description

Magnificent botryoidal to spheroidal aggregates of erythrite, displaying intense raspberry-pink to purplish-rose hues, coating an oxidized matrix rich in limonite and cobalt-bearing host rock from the famous Capo Calamita mining district, Elba Island, Tuscany. The rounded aggregates are composed of countless radiating acicular microcrystals, showing a silky to slightly vitreous luster and the characteristic velvety surface typical of well-crystallized hydrated cobalt arsenates.

Erythrite (Co₃(AsO₄)₂·8H₂O) is a secondary supergene mineral formed by the oxidation of primary cobalt sulfides within polymetallic veins. At Capo Calamita, it commonly occurs in association with pharmacosiderite, scorodite, limonite, and occasionally roselite. Specimens from this classic Italian locality are world-renowned for the depth of their color, the perfection of their spherical aggregates, and the striking contrast with the ochre-brown iron oxide matrix.
