Description

This micromount displays superb deep-blue radial spheres of connellite, composed of densely packed, lustrous acicular crystals forming hemispherical “pom-pom” aggregates lining an oxidized cavity. The needles show sharp terminations and a silky, sparkling appearance typical of well-crystallized connellite.

In the center and background, small, sharply formed emerald-green crystals of spangolite provide a striking color contrast. Cuprite, although not visible in this particular view, is reported in the association and is a common companion species in this paragenesis.

The Valpiana mining district (Massa Marittima, Tuscany) is famous for outstanding secondary copper mineral assemblages, where connellite, spangolite, brochantite and cuprite occur together in iron-oxide cavities. The vivid blue connellite spheres from this locality rank among the finest known worldwide for the species.
