Description

Remarkable crystallization of hardystonite from the metallurgical site of Saigerhütte, Germany.

The specimen displays a dense aggregate of well-individualized crystals, showing distinctly cubic to pseudocubic morphology with sharp edges and well-defined angles. The crystal faces are flat and sometimes slightly stepped, creating a highly graphic geometric appearance.

The color ranges from metallic gray to steel-brown, with subtle iridescent reflections depending on the light angle. The luster is submetallic to vitreous on fresh surfaces, and some areas show fine secondary growths.

The crystals are closely associated with a dark, metal-rich matrix, typical of the complex slag and mineralization environment of Saigerhütte.

Hardystonite is a calcium zinc silicate (Ca₂ZnSi₂O₇) belonging to the melilite group. It forms in contact metamorphic environments or in pyrometallurgical contexts.
