Description

A large and offbeat specimen from the renowned zinc lead mining location in Rhodesia, now currently one of the most polluted places in Africa.

This specimen comprises a hard matrix with a covering of fine druzy prismatic quartz crystals with a heavy coating of brownish zinc silicate material culminating in numerous fine whitish hexagonal prisms of willemite.

Centred to the specimen are a pair of fine quite large doubly terminated rhombohedral crystals of smithsonite.

The smithsonite crystals are in excellent condition with just a few minor contacts at the prominent points. The willemite although small is a quite unusual find from Broken Hill.

The willemite fluoresces fairly strongly under long wave UV light showing a yellowish colour. There are a few contacts over the specimen revealing some quartz structures within.

The specimen was acquired by Smithson from the British Museum in 1986. It had formerly belonged to Harry Edmund, a well-known and intrepid collector operating in southwest Africa in the earlier part of the 20th century.
