Description

A fascinating new find of globular fluorite from Slovenia!

The specimen offered here was collected during the discovery of this new locality in 2023. It is composed of several fluorite spheres. Their interior is dark green, whereas the edges of the cubes are often outlined by a deep purple color. Globular fluorite is found in veins of massive green fluorite hosted in Triassic dolomite rock.

Individual spheres of fluorite at this locality reach up to 7 cm and are completely crystallized, as can be seen on their surface. They are composed of a maze of tiny mysteriously oriented cubes linked by some yet unknown relationship in which each sphere is one individual fluorite crystal that has been heavily twisted. This is best seen from the back side of the specimen, showing that globules are composed of fluorite fibers radiating from a common center. All surfaces are faceted.

The reason for twisting is unknown. Spherical fluorite is found in many localities in the World, but specimens in this dimension are rare and sought by fluorite collectors.
