Meggen Mine, Lennestadt, Sauerland, North Rhine - Westphalia, Germany
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6.5 × 5 × 4.5 cm
Description

Meggen mine was started as an iron mine in the 17th century, producing pyrite which was first used for steel and, since the 19th century, for sulphuric acid production, because the ore mined at greater depth was too rich in sulphur.

Since 1950, it mainly produced sphalerite and galena concentrates.

The mine was finally closed in 1992.

This is a very good old time galena specimen with sharp and extremely shiny galena crystals on dolomite crystals. With tiny and good contrasting chalcopyrite crystals on dolomite.

Collected 1973

Ex Theo Döring collection.
