Description

Prismatic zircon crystal, of the oyamalite variety, of brown colour and net tetragonal habit, with rounded edges cause these are found in gem rich fluvial gravels at the Ratnapura area. We analyzed it with an Hitachi X-MET8000 XRF analyser, that provides also great analysis of light elements (Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl). In different analyses (two are shown here), the phosphorous surpass 10%, so it is the very rare oyamalite variety. Very interestingly, this specimen is not fluorescent, so P could be a fluorescence quencher.

Exchanged by geologist Phillippe Cuvelier in 1990. Ex Phillippe Cuvelier specimen.
