Description

Rare calomel on matrix from the classic Terlingua district, Brewster County, Texas, USA. The specimen shows greyish to colourless calomel occurring as compact crystalline to massive material on matrix, typical for this well-known mercury locality.

Calomel is a rare halide mineral, first described in 1832. The species predates the IMA system and is therefore regarded as a grandfathered mineral (pre-IMA, no official IMA number assigned). Calomel forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of mercury deposits, commonly associated with other mercury-bearing species.

The Terlingua district is one of the world’s classic localities for mercury minerals and has produced historically important calomel specimens. Calomel is considered rare, and identifiable material from Terlingua is especially sought after by systematic collectors.

The specimen originates from the former collection of C. Strömpl, an amateur mineralogist. The exact decade of collection is not documented.
