Description

The specimen displays a very attractive association in which lengenbachite occurs in two distinct habits. First, very fine metallic needles form delicate sprays, showing the acicular growth of the mineral. Secondly, the mineral also appears as compact metallic rosettes made of intergrown lamellae, giving a characteristic flower-like appearance.

These crystals are set on a light-coloured, probably quartz-rich matrix, providing a strong contrast with the lead-grey to steel-black metallic lustre of the lengenbachite. Scattered over the surface are small reddish-brown crystals of wurtzite, appearing as tiny petal-like plates, adding warm colour accents and highlighting the paragenetic richness of the Lengenbach locality.

Such a specimen is a fine illustration of the mineralogical complexity of this classic Swiss deposit, renowned for its rare sulfosalts and the wide variety of their crystal habits.
