Cubanite

Remarkable cubanite specimen from the Garpenberg mining district, Dalarna, Sweden.

The piece displays several well-defined cubanite crystals associated with and partly included in quartz. The crystals show a prismatic to sub-tabular habit, with sharp faces and distinct edges. Their color ranges from bronze-brown to steel-blue iridescent tones, typical of superficial alteration on copper-iron sulfides.

Some crystals are partially enclosed within the quartz, creating an attractive contrast between the translucent siliceous matrix and the metallic luster of the sulfides.

Under ultraviolet light, the quartz exhibits an orange fluorescence, adding significant visual interest and combining classic sulfide mineralogy with  luminescent behavior.

Cubanite (CuFe₂S₃) is a relatively uncommon copper-iron sulfide, typically associated with chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite in polymetallic ore deposits.
